Unbeknownst to many viewers, the Super Bowl sees a spike in sex-trafficking of children and teenagers every year. This happens whenever there’s a convergence of huge numbers of people around one location, and authorities in Texas are gearing up to intervene.

Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen announced an agreement with Google over its collection of data from Google Street View, a win for families as they try to keep up with the latest trends in technology.

Consumers and families who are concerned about Internet privacy and security should be pleased that Attorney General Jepsen reached an agreement with Google that holds the company accountable for illegally collecting consumer’s data – without their knowledge. Even dominant companies like Google can no longer hide behind the “oops I did it again” defense. This episode appears to be the largest privacy data breach in history and Google has an obligation to detail exactly how much data was collected as part of this negotiated statement. Those who are concerned about Internet predators, online safety and personal privacy take these invasions of privacy seriously.

SCP Recognizes the 10th Anniversary of the COPA Commission Report
Last month marks the 10-year anniversary of the COPA Commission Report. The COPA Commission was established by the Child Online Protection Act in October 1998 in order to identify methods to prevent minors from accessing harmful online material. After evaluating the effectiveness of various protective technologies and their effects on privacy and First Amendment rights and law enforcement, the COPA Commission released its final report to Congress on October 20, 2000.

Chelsea?s Law Takes a Road Trip
Earlier this year, Chelsea’s Law was enacted in California with wide bi-partisan support across the state. Chelsea’s Law, named for 17-year-old Chelsea King who was raped and murdered in San Diego by a convicted sex offender, toughens sex offender laws and restrictions. The law was authored by Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher in partnership with the family of Chelsea King.

Look Out, Cyberbullies
One of the sad truths of life is that some people are bullies. And while we?ve all dealt with our own, the Internet has caused the problem to get out of hand. Unlike regular bullying, cyberbullying can reach a much wider audience, and the proof of the attacks lasts forever on the Internet. The anonymity of the Internet has encouraged bullies to be even crueler than ever. This year, there have been several high-profile cases of cyberbullying leading to suicide, such as Phoebe Prince, and more recently, Tyler Clementi. The one silver lining in all the cyberbullying tragedies is that people are starting to take notice and take action.

SCP, local leaders awarded “Spirit of Compassion” by Massachusetts Advocacy Group
Stop Child Predators Chairman Mark Lunsford and President Stacie Rumenap were recently awarded the Community VOICES “Spirit of Compassion” Award for their efforts in passing Jessica?s Law in Massachusetts. Jessica?s Law, which now exists in 44 states, toughens sex offender laws by creating mandatory minimum sentencing for convicted sex offenders who prey on children.

Stacie Rumenap talked to KQKE Radio Host Scott Draughon today on “My Technology Lawyer” about the dangers to consumer’s privacy in today’s fast-moving world of Internet innovations. Rumenap discussed the recent FTC decision to turn a blind eye toward Google after the company admitted it collected unauthorized data from wireless networks while it was collecting data for its Street View mapping program. She explained the process by which Google collects images of streets and houses for Street View, and how the photos are collected without the consent of the people who are featured, often times including children playing in their own front yards.
The Internet has brought some fantastic innovations, especially in the last several years. I find that Internet maps especially come in handy. Gone are the days when bulky maps are carted around or the family wagon is pulled to the side of the road so mom and dad can argue, I mean “discuss,” directions. Internet maps and GPS services are easily available to help everyone navigate the roads a lot more smoothly. While many software companies have maps available, Google has taken it to the next level through the use of their Street View service that allows users to easily view photos of nearly any street they want to see.
