SAMPLE TEXT

Dear [Municipal Public Official name],

I write as a concerned parent about a new technology that can be misused and potentially endanger our children.

You may be familiar with the new online mapping tool, “Street View” by Google Maps. This technology gives anyone with an Internet connection the ability to view street level pictures of any address that has been captured in the Street View program. While this technology allows you to find your own home on a map, it also allows anyone else to view an unprecedented amount of information about you and your family without your permission, using street level photographs of hundreds of thousands of homes, schools, parks and playgrounds from around the country.

These images can include sensitive locations of where children live and congregate, such as bus stops, schools and, in some cases, even pictures of children playing in their own yard. And these are images that are taken without consent of any kind from parents, homeowners, municipalities, etc. My concern is that this type of technology can provide an open door to child predators to come into our neighborhoods and prey on our children.

As parents, and as a community as a whole, the possibility that this technology could be used to endanger our children should give us reason to think twice before allowing it into our community. Additionally, Street View can add an unnecessary burden on parents to ensure the safety of our children. After all, our children’s safety is our number one priority and we cannot allow to be compromised.

I urge you to look into this matter and consider banning Street View from our neighborhoods until it can be safeguarded to better protect our children.

Sincerely,
